Summary on Grant Application Form
Interstitial condensation prediction models are extensively used by building professionals both during design and when planning refurbishments. The prediction methods currently in use are widely accepted as being over-simplistic in their representation of the moisture transmission process. Although more rigorous second generation prediction models are being developed, they neglect the coupled effect of temperature gradient on moisture transmission rates, which to date has received little investigation due to the technical and experimental difficulties involved. The aim of this proposed project is to quantify the significance of non-isothermal effects on moisture transmission and to develop appropriate algorithms for its description. This will enable prediction models in the future to be applied with greater reliability and so reduce the incidence of condensation and moisture damage within buildings.
