Summary on Grant Application Form |
There are two closely linked objectives which relate to understanding the physics of the formation and destruction of metal colloids formed by metal ion implantation in insulators. 1. Such colloids have been shown to have a power dependent refractive index. The first aim of this project is to optimise the non-linear response by controlling the colloid size. Initial examples were with Ag and Cu but this project will include other metals, specifically Ga, since this should exist as a liquid phase with potentially a greater optical sensitivity.2. Colloids are undesirable in the case of rare earth implants to form waveguide lasers. Our preliminary results indicate that eximer laser annealing, after thermal treatments, can eradicate some of the problems and hence the treatments will be to increase the RE luminescence intensity and lifetime.
