Summary on Grant Application Form |
Novel textile reinforced composites manufactured by Cranfield Uni, will be subjected to impact and subsequent compression to assess damage tolerace. The absolute performance levels and deformation mechanisms will be assess in realtion to existing knowledge and experience and conventional composite forms and first generation textile composites. Initail work will focus on simple flat plates of varying thickness. Later work will include studies on more complex shapes to allow an understanding of the role of geometry, manufacturing route and textile formability on impact and damage tolerance to be assessed. The empirical test programme will be supported by modellunf studies, NDT and microscopic examination of damage processes.
