Summary on Grant Application Form
Oligomides (short chain `nylons') first prepared over 30 years ago are inherently insoluble in common organic solvents because of the hydrogen-bonding associated with the amide groups present and so their purity cannot be assessed by sensitive chromatographic techniques (HPLC). This research concerns the synthesis of very pure oligomides via intermediates which have been rendered soluble in organic solvents by the temporary removal of the hydrogen-bonding factor, using a protecting group; consequently they can be purified by preparative scale chromotography. The authentic oligomers are finally obtained by removal of the protecting group. The work will begin with the monomeric species used to manufacture nylon 6. It will be converted into intermediates for interaction to form the first protected amide containing compound. Conditions for the partial and total deprotection of this material will then set the scene for the general chain-extension reactions which will be used repetitively.
