Summary on Grant Application Form |
A laser-lofting designator system will be developed to aid manufacturing assembly by verifying design parameters and tolerances at various stages in the fabrication process. In the first instance the system will be applied to ship building context in partnership with one of the collaborating companies. The system will eliminate the need for physical templates. Using an interactive computer system, machine vision and automated marking (by computer controlled laser) the efficiency of the lay-up process and component assembly will be improved. The need for green metal , at present carried forward for trimming, will be eliminated. The system will elevate the need for tracing templates or much of the hard tooling normally required in fabrication. The project will identify other areas of engineering manufacture for application of the methods and hardware developed in the project.
