Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project concerns the automated TIG welding of aluminium alloys using thr AC TIG process. Many sensor based technique have been researched by the applicants over the past years to investigate seam tracking, weld pool monitoring and weld bead based shapefor the welding of stainless steel plate. These sensor techniques will now be applied to the welding of aluminium alloys to maintain a high weld quality, reduce the level of defects and remove the need for costly non-destructive testing (NDT). One major problem with the welding of aluminium is that it requires the use of AC TIG to break down the aluminium oxide. Therefore, special consideration will be given to the filtering of hf signals which are necessary to maintain the arc quality. The preferred welding parameters will be encapsulated in a neural network and this provide the bases of a neural controller to overcome such problems as cast to cast variations. An on-line examination of the welding parameters and the weld pool characteristics will indicate instabilities in the weld and indicate if defects have occured.
