Summary on Grant Application Form
High strength Al - allots used currently in airframes are not weldable. This project's role od thus to develop weldable Al-alloys suitable for airframe qualification. The project is split into two pjhases. In phase 1 all available data and literature on existing weldable aluminium alloys will be collated. Missing data will be supplemented by testing to establish a comprehensive database. Russian calin that they the weldable airframe alloys will be compiled. The most promising alloys will be identifies and their deficiencies, in the contect of airframe qualification, determined. Trail welds will be carried out and their microsctures and properties studied. In phase 2 a range of compositions of alloys and filler materials, will be designed, based on the data acquired in phase 1, with the aim of achieveing aerospace specification. These alloys will be processed and subjected to welded trials. The microstructure and properties of the welded joints will be investigated s a function of conposition and processing conditions to determin their limitations and optimse their compositions and prcessing.
