Summary on Grant Application Form
We have developed a powerful new method for probing the stereodynamics of bimolecular reactions. It is based upon the use of polarised, Doppler spectroscopy to probe the state-resolved products of laser photo-initiated reactions. The stereodynamics of a series of reactions important in combustion and in atmospheric chemistry will be studied; they include reactions involving 0(D) atoms with molecules such as H2 , HD, D2; HC1; H2180; HCN, CH4 and H atoms with C02 and N20. Central questions to be addressed include the stereodynamics of the reactive transition state(s) in single and (branched) multichannel reactions; the incidence and lifetime distributions of persistent collision complexes; the identification of elementary reaction pathways.
