Summary on Grant Application Form |
We are measuring, for British Gas, the differential corrosion rates within duplex steels by use of atomic force micro-scopy (AFM) in HCI. We plan to use this system with its clearly difined austenitic and ferritic phases as a substrate on which to develop the use of in situ chemical force microscopy (CFM) for the study of inhibitors. We will gain the ability to map, in situ, the distribution of inhibitors on surfaces. This will be validated by ex situ techniques. A reliable technique for the study of adsorbed molecules, at high resolution, on immersed surfaces will have commercial significance.
