High resolution STM and AFM will examine lithium insertion into steps on the basal plane of MoS from non-aqueous electrolytes. Lower resolution will be used to investigate changes in grain size and shape which cause disconnection from the electronic conduction matrix. Further work will examine battery electrodes, e.g. graphite and Li, CoO electrochromic films, e.g. WO, and sensor electrodes, e.g. PdO in order to identify structural factors which lead to improved materials.
