The effect of zirconium (0.01-0.04 W/o ) on the grain refinement of austenite in low carbon steel by carbonitride precipitation will be studied. The solubility equation for ZrCN in austenite in the temperature range 900o to 1350o will be established. Precipitate composition, morphology and size distribution following re-heating up to 1350o will be characterised by STEM/EDX/PEELS and related to austenite grain size.
