Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objectives of economic efficiency and sustainability in urban transport are best met by a combination of infrastructure, management and pricing measures. However, these will be insufficient on their own to achieve sustainability, and land use policies are needed which reinforce the impact of the transport measures. The impacts of transport on land use are not well understood and the effects of measures such as infrastructure provision or road pricing may lead to changes in accessibility and environmental quality which induce less sustainable land use patterns. This research proposal takes advantage of recent developments in strategic transport and land use interaction models to investigate these impacts more fully, to enhance the existing models, to determine the impact on sustainability of land use responses, and to assess the sustainability of combined land use and transport strategies. The study will focus on Edinburgh, for which the strategic model has initially been built. It is intended that the relationships wihtin the model can later be incorporated into the EPSRC Quantifiable City model under development at Leeds.
