This project applies biological limiting factors theory to individual environmental action. In doing so the research looks at the major factors that influence whether or not an individual takes environmental action. For the purposes of this project, waste recycling is used as a practical example and as a means of testing this theory. Three main limiting factors appear worthy of investigation in relation to waste recycling: information, motivation/attitude and convenience.The theory would be tested by investigating the recycling of domestic waste in two cities in the UK (Leicester and Cardiff). It would provide insights into the methods of modelling the impacts of various environmental policy options, and would also investigate the development of various sub-models that could be used as part of wider, GIS based, energy and environmental performance (EEP) model which is being developed at the University of Wales.The work would be of relevance to other UK local authorities and to other cities in the European Union and other countries. By studying the application of limiting factors to environmental action, and applying the knowledge gained, there is potential both to save money and to close the gap between environmental concern and invidiual action for sustainability.
