Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have preliminary evidence suggesting that certain ceramics may prove useful as current limiters in electrical power systems, particularly flexible AC systems using power electronics. However, some further investigation of basic current-limiting mechanisms is needed in order to aid the development of practical materials. To this end, we propose to fabricate a range of ceramics with differing compositions and sintering processes and to study their electrical and other relevant material properties. From this, we aim to develop improved models of current-limiting behaviour, to identify and fabricate potentially useful ceramics and to test these under practical power-system conditions.
