Summary on Grant Application Form
Embedded optical fibres used for sensing in smart materials weaken the structure because the diameter of the sensing fibres is greater than that of the reinforcing fibres. In insects and spiders the sensors are formed as an integral part of the stiff outer shell. These examples can be copied or used to inspire the implementation of similar functions. The sensors will be modelled using Finite Elements. Physical models will be fabricated using materials with different fibres, based on the predicted optimised solutions from modelling. Strain sensitivity of the sensing areas will be obtained from direct measurements using bonded strain gauge techniques.
