Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this research is to obtain a quantitative understanding of the effect of the impingement of a liquid flow on the solidification front of a metal. The study will be performed using Group I metals which are transparent over a range of ultra-violet wavelengths. This will enable the direct observation of fluid flow effects during solidification by transmission ultra-violet light microscopy. Employing this novel technique will allow the effect of liquid metal velocity, liquid metal temperature and flow orientation, at the point of impact to be examined.
