In developed countries domestic sewage is normally disposed using waterborne collection systems (sewers) leading to wastewater treatment plants (WTPs). Such waster comprises a range of solid material, generally introduced via the water closet (WC), and includes faecal stools and sanitary refuse. There are a number of initiatives in the UK to encourage the disposal of sanitary waste (other than faecal materials and toilet paper) away from the sewered route into the solid waste stream. Whilst the waterborne route is now perceived by water utilities to not be the most efficient of sustainable disposal rout, as yet, no comprehensive studies have been undertaken to evaluate the alternative methods of sanitary waste disposal. If disposal via the solid waste stream is preferable, the advantages have not as yet been quantified and no benefit-cost assessments have been made. The proposed study will provide the opportunity to address the technical, social, health, legal, economic and institutional issues related to alternative systems for sanitary waste disposal, particularly as regards which form of system is likely to be the most sustainable within the life of cities.
