Summary on Grant Application Form |
This three year project will contribute to knowledge on the implementation of sustainable development through an evaluation of the employment implications of carbon reduction strategies in urban environments. The project will calculate carbon flows and CO2 emissions within Manchester's urban environment. A decision-support system will be constructed which will have as an input data from these calculations. The support system will be used to prioritise a range of carbon abatement strategies. The optimal strategies for carbon reduction will then be appraised in terms of their employment implications with the aim of equating the employment generated or lost in carbon equivalents, ie tonnes of carbon abated per capita compared to tonnes of carbon committed. The project will produce a carbon emission calculation and reduction strategy for Manchester. In addition, the research will produce a generally applicable decision support system, a procedure for carbon emission calculations/estimation and a series of best practice guidelines.
