Summary on Grant Application Form
Both the foundry-man and heat treater have important roles to play in the production of ADI. That of the heat treater is reasonably well established; that of the foundry-man is not. The purpose of the proposed research is to establish and define the latter. This will be achieved by making simple castings of alloyed irons and showing quantitatively how structural features, porosity, nodularity, carbide and nodule count and ADI properties vary with position in the casting. The influence of each feature on ADI properties will be defined as will the tolerance limits of each feature that the foundry-man must achieve. Finally the improvements in ADI properties possible with such a structure for different austempering heat treatments will be determined.
