Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this application for a bridging grant to support Michael Smith is to provide continuity between work carried out in GR/J19122 (`The Improvement of Traffic Signal Control Through Buses Acting as Probes'), and an unfunded alpha application (GR/K12724) to be re-submitted on 1 January 1995 (entitled `The Assessment of Cell-based Approaches to Automatic Vehicle Locationing Systems'). In the absence of a bridging grant we would be unable to retain the services of Michael Smith, a highly trained and productive Research Associate. The one person in the Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) with intimate knowledge of the SIGSIM microscopic traffic simulator, which is essential for research in traffic signal control, would be lost. During the bridging period Michael Smith will be able to enhance the SIGSIM microscopic road traffic simulator through provision of a Windows environment and updated documentation; and to formulate the programming requirements for the modelling of GPS-based Automatic Vehicle Locationing (AVL).
