Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal addresses the complex rheology of foams and emulsions which, while of considerable industrial importance, is still very poorly understood. A systematic approach to the study of the fundamental physical processes underlying this rheology is proposed. Three techniques are propsed: diffusing wave spectroscopy ( a novel light scattering method ), a pulsed variation of this and direct imaging of 2D foam. When applied to foam subject to stress or flowing, these techniques are capable of revealing micromechanical structural response of the foam and the dynamics involved. Particular attention will be placed on testing predictions of computer simulations to validate and stimulate such studies, and on developing the optical methods to provide techniques for process monitoring and control. The proposal envisages continuing interaction with scientists and technologists from universities and industry.
