Summary on Grant Application Form
The research is concerned with several aspects of waves and nonlinear effects in plasmas, both magnetically confined and laser produced. In the area of magnetically confined plasmas the nonlinear behaviour of toroidal Alfven eigenmodes will be considered. These are predicted to be generated by fast particles and an understanding of their behaviour and saturation is crucial for fusion research. Aspects of ion cyclotron absorption, one possible source of fast particles, will also be considered. On the laser plasma side the objective is to analyse some of the nonlinear effects which intense laser radiation may generate, in various density regimes.
