Summary on Grant Application Form
High repetition rate, pulsed lasers are routinely used as energy sources for vaporisation of a variety of materials, where the subsequent deposition of the material on a substrate can yield thin films of high quality and of technological interest. The details of the fundamental processes involved at the low irradience levels normally used for this application are not well understood and an empirical approach is currently adopted to optimise thin film quality. This proposal seeks to improve our understanding of the laser-target interaction, the evolution of the plume and its interaction with ambient gases which are often required for specific applications. The study will be approached on two fronts - experimental observation and the validation of computational modelling. Experimental work will be based on a suite of complementary diagnostics including absorption and emission spectroscopy, Schlieren imaging, interferometry and ion flow measurements. Code validation will be mainly though the generation of synthetic spectra and interferograms for direct comparison with data taken over parameter ranges of incident laser intensity, laser wavelength, target composition and plume environment.
