Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks postdoctoral and consumable support for a programme directed towards the optimisation of optical fibre amplifiers that use the electronic transitions of lanthanide ions in crystallline and glassy media. It has three elements (a) the characterisation of the lanthanide sites in chloride glasses, (b) a programme directed towards understanding the influence of electron-correlation on the non-radiative relaxation rates which control the efficiency of these amplifiers, and (c) the investigation of nanocrystalline glass composites as potential optical gain media. It builds on our ongoing studies of the two-photon spectroscopy of inorganic materials, as well as on the low temperature site-selective spectroscopy of rare-earth doped fluoride glasses, currently being pursued in a CASE project with BT Laboratories, Martlesham Heath.
