Summary on Grant Application Form |
Back pain and back injuries are a major problem in the working and general populations and lead to substantial costs to manufacturing industry and in the required medical provision. Back pain and injury result from inadequately designed workplaces and work tasks - difficulties which need to be addressed by a greater understanding of the source of the problems, the provision of design tools to apply this knowledge and the training of those at risk. Legislation exists that attempts to provide safe working limits, but is inadequate to accommodate the complexity and subtlety of the problem. This proposal seeks a solution using computer mathematical models to provide a humanly safe method of evaluating a wide range of design possibilities using analytic techniques which have their roots in structural and mechanical engineering (ie biomechanics). Computer models also provide the most natural means of producing design tools for the application of the analyses to specific working and recreational activities.
