Summary on Grant Application Form |
Neutron diffraction is one of the most versatile tools for determining structures of microcrystalline powders, glasses and amorphous materials of wide importance in materials science, physics and chemistry. Existing neutron diffractometers at ILL and ISIS either have high-Q resolution with good background, but long data collection time, or high countrate and a relatively low resolution. We propose to design and build a time-of-flight diffractometer that will combine high resolution over a wide Q range with the high countrate needed for varying sample conditions such as temperature, pressure and chemical reaction. Time-of-flight diffraction gives access to a very wide range of d-spacings with constant resolution for all d (or Q). Fixed detector geometry also simplifies provision of specialised sample environments. The instrument will be installed on the beamline at ISIS currently occupied by the obsolescent first generation LAD diffractor. Special features are a large detector area, high degree of collimation of both incident and scattered beams, a novel design of adjustable primary collimation and high detector stability over a large solid angle as a result of advances in detector technology.
