Summary on Grant Application Form
Traditionally, fluorine has been regarded as a ligand suitable only for high oxidation-state metals. Our recent research has demonstrated that inorganic fluorides react readily and predictably with organometallic species to yield low-valent transition-metal fluorides in which the strengths of the metal-fluoride bonds are sufficiently predictable to allow synthetic chemistry at the metal centre, the fluorine ligand or at the other co-ordinated ligands. Furthermore, many of the complexes are air- and moisture-stable. Of particular importance is the observation that some metal centres promote carbon-fluorine bond formation. This application seeks to put this class of compounds on a firm footing and to develop their potential by A) an investigation of synthetic routes and ligand compatibility and B) elucidation of the reaction chemistries concentrating on C-F bond formation.
