Summary on Grant Application Form |
The interaction of a high power laser beam with a low density uniform preformed foam plasma heated by an intense source of soft X-ray radiation will be studied. The soft X-ray drive will be produced by focusing a number of laser beams into a Hohlraum target. Observations will be carried out for the laser-plasma interaction. In particular, a study will be made of the Stimulated Brillouin Scattering, Stimulated Raman Scattering and laser filamentation, in the 'hot' (2keV) long scalelength (Ln>4n0) plasmas generated when such preformed foam plasmas are irradiated with direct laser irradiation. Particular attention will be given to the role of filamentation in generating 'hot' electrons via stimulated Raman scattering and Two Plasmon Decay (TPD). The behaviour of these instabilities and the whole beam self-focusing will be studied in plasmas with conditions relevant to those of the novel direct-drive foam-buffer ICF scheme. These measurements are essential for the viability of the direct-drive foam-buffered scheme.
