Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main aims of the research are to investigate the fundamental behaviour of granular soils subject to impact testing and assess the viability of such tests for routine use in industry, specifically highway construction and trench reinstatement. Previous research at Loughborough has demonstrated a market need, and estalbished a theoretical model (as yet unvalidated), via the development of a swinging arm impact apparatus. These unique data will facilitate validation of the theoretical model and confirm/etablish sound analytical interpretation methods for impact testing. The industrial support will be essentially used to plan and supervise the rigorous testing programme and crucially to aid in interpreting the results from an industry perspective. The industrial partner, having part funded some of the previous research, is keen to rapidly develop the test for industrial use once proved by the research.
