Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a wide ranging programme of experimental and theoretical atomic, molecular and positron physics. The work pervades and embraces fundamental, atmospheric, plasma, fusion, laser and condensed matter physics as well as astrophysics and chemistry. Experiments will probe laser assisted electron collisions with H, H2, He* and CO, and measure the first differential cross sections for this process. Electron scattering cross sections from H2, NO and atmospheric molecules will be measured, as will be the fragmentation dynamics of CO2 and N20 in highly excited electronic states. Positronium (Ps) - noble gas, H2 and 02 cross sections will be determined and the threshold and differential behaviour of processes leading to Ps formation and ionization by positron impact will be investigated. We will calculate Ps formation cross sections for positron - He, alkali metal and Ar collisions and positron impact ionisation of H, alkali metals and Ar. The spectroscopic determination of potential energy surfaces will include non-Born-Oppenheimer effects, treat the multi-surface N02 problem and 03. Greatly improved treatments of target wavefunctions in electron-molecule collision calculations will be achieved using the Cray T3D and electronic excitation and other processes in H2, NO, CO and NO+ studied. A radiative transfer model of H emission lines in TOKAMAK divertors will be developed.
