Summary on Grant Application Form
In the field of drinking water treatment there is a growing need in the UK and internationally for enhanced coagulation in order to achieve higher final water qualities. The proposed research concerns the development of a new and potentially more effective coagulant chemical, namely polyalumino-iron sulphate (PAFS). The study will evaluate different methods of preparing PAFS and determine the properties of the resulting chemicals. The coagulation performance of selected PAFS types will be evaluated by jar test experiments using model and real waters corresponding to typical lowland, hard waters and coloured, upland waters. On the basis of this the method of preparing PAFS will be optimised to produce those properties that are likely to give the best water treatment performance.
