In a TOKAMAK divertor, thermal energy flows to the walls of the machine via particles and radiation. Current divertor designs will not be able to support the energy flux anticipated in the prototype ignited reactor, ITER (International Experimental Reactor). There is great interest iin divertor designs in which the plasma is detached from the wall of the vessel and radiates energy, spreading the power load. These dense detached plasmas may become optically thick to Lyman radiation, which will significantly affect the power loss and possibly the ionization balance in the divertor. This project aims to model the interaction of Lyman photons with the JET divertor plasma, to provide a better undertanding of the physics and a means of determining the optical thicknesss of the plasma from spectroscopic information obtained in the optical and ultra-violet. In a first approximation, simulations of the ionization balance and hydrodynamic properties of the JET divertor will be coupled to a collisional-radiative model of deuterium and an escape probability treatment of the Lyman radiation. In the first instance a simple plane-parallel geometry will be used and the calculations will be compared to observed Lyman and Balmer line intensities. Subsequent steps will include more realistic geometries and a more accurate treatment of the radiative transfer.
