Summary on Grant Application Form |
Broadband networks will support many new applications which will include point-to-multipoint working. These include video distribution, multimedia conferencing and continuous information delivery. Multicast routing for these applications must ensure efficient use of network resources and may be subject to delay constraints. This project will extend existing research work in which we are developing multicast routing heuristics using graph-theoretical techniques, which offer efficient solutions while keeping delays to all recipients within a bound. Evaluation will be carried out by developing realistic network and multicast group models. We shall seek to enhance the techniques for both sparse and dense groups, for fluctuating group membership and using a distributed, rather than a centralised, approach. The work will be applied by considering the most appropriate ways in which our techniques can be included in the multicasting plans for both the Internet and for Broadband ISDN.
