Summary on Grant Application Form |
Good patient education can significance lower health service costs and enhance patient quality of life. Patient education materials are more effective if they are personalised to the individual patient. We will develop and evaluate techniques to generate such materials automatically, given information about the patient available in their medical record. We have already completed a short feasibility study in this area, with encouraging results. We now need to develop further techniques, so that they may be usefully applied to a wide range of types of patient education materials (and related applications). We will do this by developing and evaluating two main demonstrator systems: one to provide cancer patients with explanations of information in their record; one to provide pregnant women with information to help them in making decisions about their treatment. These systems will be evaluated in clinics in Glasgow.
