Summary on Grant Application Form |
The limitations of current vehicle classification equipment restricts its use of sites where recurrent congestion does not occur and where god lane disciplines prevails. These conditions are becoming increasingly uncommon at important sites, both on the motorway network and in urban areas. The research proposed is thus concerned with the development of a generic vehicle classification system based on the recognition of vehicle features using image processing techniques. This technology has the potential to resolve, as seperate entities, two very closely adjacent vehicles, moving without lane disciplines, facilitating a vehicle classification system which may be developed at any site where a traffic engineer is interested in determining automatically the types of vehicles using the road space.
