Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks funding to replace my very recently defunct (14 year old) excimer pump laser. The replacement laser will be crucial element in the implementation of a novel program of research into the photofragmentation dynamics of a range of gas phase molecules (e.g. CIO2, CIONO2, CH4, CO2 and N2O). It will also enable us to start two completely new, related programs of research designed to further our understanding of the gas phase chemistry prevailing in the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of thin film diamond.Specifically, we will explore (I) the applicability of in situ third harmonic generation (the theory for which we have already developed) for monitoring the spatial variation of H atom concentrations within both hot filament and microwave CVD reactors and (ii) the use of cavity ring down spectroscopy to monitor CH3 radical concentrations in such reactors.
