Summary on Grant Application Form |
Various classes of microstructured solids exhibit strain-softening and consequent deformation localisation. For these porous, phase transforming or heterogeneous materials we plan to (i) obtain constituent material and microstructural properties from dynamic tests at both quasi-static and large rates of strain, and (ii) develop a finite element that incorporates a tensorial internal variable representation of the microstructure to obtain stable solutions for localisation phenomena. The finite element formulation is aimed at providing an understanding of transient behaviour in response to high rate loading such as occurs in high speed machining or ballistic impact.
