Summary on Grant Application Form |
Starch from flours and low grade sources will be converted into mouldable foamed structures for shock absorption in packaging from expanded starch pellets. The products will be studied as hierarchies of structures and the relationships between materials aspects, processing variables and cellular structures will be established. The specific failure initiation and failure progression modes will be quantified using microscopy and mechanical testing; materials properties and test results will be integrated with modelling and numerical techniques. This will provide a rational basis for predicting stiffness, cushioning, failure and impact performance which can be compared with existing oil-based polymer products currently used in structural packaging. We shall thus produce a new range of environmentally friendly systems for the packaging industry which are made by clean, solvent-free processing routes and which are recyclable or biodegradable for ultimate disposal (composting, for example). The proposed products will meet current EU directive and future legislation as well as reduce the usage of oil-based materials.
