Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a collaborative project to incorporate novel long-wavelength LED sources into gas monitoring instrumentation. The LED sources offer high modulation frequency, long wavelength operation and the ability to fabricate arrays. These are significant advantages over conventional filament sources with glass envelopes. The increased wavelength range allows the monitoring of many pollutant gases, such as the oxides of nitrogen, for which there is a strong and growing demand, with associated legislation in many cases. This research will develop a laboratory prototype gas monitor using the new LEDs. The LEDs will be characterised and results fed back to their development programme. The monitor geometry and optics will be designed in close collaboration with Edinburgh Sensors, as it will be based on their existing light pipe technology. Benefits will be felt in monitor technology and in fundamental semiconductor device design.
