At present there is a market in manufacturing for a low cost, robust optical displacement sensor which is intrinsically safe and which provides absolute position readings to a resolution of 10 microns over a range of a few centimetres. Currently this need is not met and we therefore propose a new type of sensor which makes use of low cost optoelectronic and electronic components, in particular using electronics for much of the signal processing to minimise cost.The sensor is described in detail in the case for support but relies on a novel form of swept frequency decoding of the cross-correllation of high quality picosecond pulse signals, which Bath can generate using low cost AlGaAs/GaAs lasers. This technique avoids the need for high speed detectors and significantly increases the receiver sensitivity, requiring only 0.1%.Bath will be responsible for the sensor design and laser drive circuit whilst RDP Electronics will undertake the customised data acquisition system development and the mechanical design of the sensor head. Bath will carry out the initial testing of the completed sensor within a laboratory environment whilst RDP will coordinate the user trials in industrial applications.
