Summary on Grant Application Form |
Three related topics are addressed: phase ordering kinetics, aging in spin glasses, and growth kinetics. The aims are to understand in detail the influence of gravity on phase separation to investigate the form of corrections to scaling in ordering kinetics, to derive approximate scaling functions for phase separation in binary liquids, to use the study of aging to elucidate the nature of the ordered phase of spin glasses, and to gain insight into kinetic roughening as described by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation by exploiting the existence of a soluble limit. The research involves three different phenomena linked by a description in terms of strong-coupling renormalisation-group fixed points. Conventional perturbative methods are inapplicable in such systems, which therefore represent a major challenge to theory.
