Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research would occupy a period of 2 years and be carried out by the investigators supported by part time technical staff. It would involve the following stages:1. Establishment of further contacts with local authority bridge engineers in the South West and the gathering of data on life times and failures of bridge bearings.2. Analysis and modelling of data using reliability software.3. Derivation of appropriate observation/maintenance schedules and feedback to practicing engineers.4. Inspection of failed bearing units by a range of techniques including optical and electron microscopy.5. Comparison of repeated contact and fretting test equipment and their application to the failure of typical bearing materials under laboratory conditions.6. Comparison of laboratory and service failures and the elucidation of the dominant failure mechanism(s).7. Suggestions for improved designs/construction.
