Summary on Grant Application Form |
A critical review of literature concerning application of corrosion inhibitors in repair systems for corrosion-damaged reinforced concrete structures will be undertaken to highlight potential limitations of existing systems and point the way to development of more reliable ones. These may involve new combinations of inhibitors and well-defined procedures for introducing and maintaining appropriate concentrations around the reinforcing steel. Selected systems will then be applied to specimens of carbonated and chloride-contaiminated concrete in which the corrosion rates of embedded steel are monitored electrochemically. Both laboratory-produced specimens and cores from exposed structures will be used. Distributions of inhibitors in specimens with and without surface coatings will be assessed during exposure to cyclic wetting and drying. Effects of leaching and diffusion on the effectiveness of corrosion inhibitors will be evaluated, as will the risks of unwanted side-effects such as exacerbated pitting or alkali silica reaction. When the laboratory studies are well-advanced, site trials will be initiated at selected structures.
