Visualisation has proven to be one of the most powerful ways to interpret and understand complex sets of data, such as records of financial transactions, corporate databases, customer profiles, and marketing databases. Particular problems arise, however, when the data involves large numbers of variables, corresponding to spaces of high dimensionality, and when there are complex non-linear correlations in the data. Additionally, such data are often plagued with deficiencies such as missing variables, irrelevant variables, mislabelled values, and inconsistencies in the representations of different quantities. Such problems severely limit the performance of current visualisation algorithms, and this is reflected in the identification of visualisation as a Key Question in the EPSRC programme. This project will investigate the theoretical basis for visualising data using neural networks, and will exploit several recent advances in neural computing to develop novel practical techniques for visualisation which can deal with the above problems. The project is supported directly by Barclays Bank Plc and by Recognition Systems Ltd, who will provide a substantial level of in-house effort, together with example data-bases, and software tools.
