The proposal aims to develop the theory of soliton interactions in two and three dimensions. Geometrical and numerical techniques will be combined to produce a finite-dimensional dynamical system which models the field dynamics. Our primary mathematical tool will be the gradient flow equation associated with the field theory. The results will be applied to the Skyrmion interactions and the interaction of the vortices. The quantised dynamics of two Skyrmions models nuclear forces, and we plan to see if the deuteron can be understood in terms of 2-Skyrmion interactions. Results based on a 10-dimensional dynamical system (rather than the correct 12-dimensional one) are encouraging.The proposed study of vortex interactions in super-conductors and other condensed matter systems should improve our understanding of high Tc-superconductors and superfluids.We plan to publish our results in physics journals, like Nuclear Physics A and Physical Review B.
