Summary on Grant Application Form |
The electroreductive synthesis of many substituted poly-p-xylylenes (PPXs) and poly (p-phenylenevinylenes) (PPVs) has been established by the QMW group as convenient and versatile and providing these important polymers as solids, not films. Reductive elimination of bromine is involved and reaction proceeds via quinodimethanes. These important intermediates cannot be assessed via chlorides but preliminary experiments encourage the belief that this advance could be achieved via redox catalysis by low oxidation state Co and Ni, possibly Pd, complexes. Similarly both directly and mediated anodic oxidation of bis-carboxylates (the pseudo-Kolbe reaction) will provide a new route to electron-rich PXs capable of being oxidised as films to PPVs or, by the catalytic route, isolated as solid polymers. Again, the direct and catalytic routes should give products with interesting and useful differences; both methods are clean technology. The physical, electrical and chemical properties of the materials will be determined. The electrochemical method is particularly suitable for depositing samples on optically transparent electrodes (e.g. ITO).
