The aim of the programme is to develop new polymeric materials specifically designed to show enhance resistance towards environmental degradation and to give improved performance when fabricated into membranes for ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis.Four new areas of high-performance polymer chemistry are proposed, based on (I) conversion of ?-chain aromatic ketone groups to oxidatively stable but hydrophilic trifluoromethyl carbinol linkages [-Ar-C(CF3)(OH)-Ar-], (ii) nucleophilic polyetherification of bis- and ?is(fluoroaryl) sulfoxonium ions [(4-FC6H4)n(C6H5)3-nSO]+ for novel cationic and zwitterionic polymers, (iii) synthesis of potentially lyotropic polyxanthones using cyano-activated polyetherification followed by Houben-Hoesch cyclisation, and (iv) development of synthetic routes to poly-m-phenylene, a polymer not yet obtained at high MW but one which has considerable potential as a material ultrafiltration and ( in derivatised e.g. sulfonated, form) for reverse osmosis and nanofiltration.New solution-based processes will be explored for the fabrication of such materials into membrane form, and their characteristics will be assessed in terms of permeability, selectivity, and chemical and physical durability.
