Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal establishes a new strategy for the preparation, characterisation and study of cluster star porphyrazines and structurally related ribbon and sheet polymeric arrays. A new system of porphrazine based polynucleating ligands that are capable of binding one metal ion (M1) at the centre and one, two, three or four additional metal ions (M2) at the periphery is described. This new class of ligands will be used in the systematic preparation of supra-order multimacrocyclic porphrazine oligomers by edge sharing of M2 metal ions between adjacent Porphrazine units. These novel supramolecular systems will be prepared from Porphrazine di, tetra and octa - amine and -thiol ligands using metal ion (M2) co-ordination chemistry to link up assemblies of Porphrazine units in preordained oligomeric association and, in many cases, of fixed and defined molecular weight. These novel polymers should have considerable advantages over existing phthalocyanine/Porphrazine based polymers including homogeneous structure, easily tailores physical properties such as solubility, redox chemistry and ease of fabrication. The resultant polymeric porphyrazines have many potential industrial applications including uses as novel magnetic, optical and imaging materials, as high performance inks and dyes, in high performance membrane technology, and as infrared absorbers, oxidation catalysts, organic photoconductors and sensors, etc.
