The fluids in use for the wellbore flow simulation exhibit similar rheological properties to actual drilling fluids: shear thinning (pseudo plastic_, thixotropic and viscoelastic. At high shear rates the Carris Med Controlled Stress Rheometer (in use since 1990) is adequate for the determination of the low level visco elastic properties which frequently distunguis one fluid from another and which strongly influence flow behaviour under turbulent conditions, particularly with respect to drag reduction. Regular monitoring of the fluids in use is essential given the tendency of polymeric fluids to degrade because of both shearing and ageing. Both to distinguish more precisely between fluids, and also to provide data which must be included in CRD codes for the calculation of non Newtonian fluid flows, a more sensitive rheometer is required. The instrument requested will thus be in daily use from the time of delivery.
