Summary on Grant Application Form |
Anisotropic carbon/carbon composite materials will be synthesised by a novel technique of Reactive HIPING of continuous carbon fibre reinforced PEEK. The tribological performance of this unique materila will be studied under a wide range of conditions in pin-on-plate, pin-on-disc and disc-on-disc tribological systems, and compared to the precursor material APC2. The effect of electric field and humidity of the formation of the dynamic transfer films will also be studied. A novel feature of this proposal is the development of a miniature tribiological stage for real time analysis of and molecular level interrogation of the surfaces and interfaces as they are formed in the SCIENTA ES300 High Energy Photoelectron Spectrometer. This will allowinvestigation of the orientation of surface layers in the anisotropic material during sliding. This fundamental research will underpin the future application of these novel materials in tribiological systems.
